A plain-English guide to reading a political poll
Sample size, question wording, likely-voter models, and timing can matter more than the number in the headline.
A poll is a measurement with uncertainty, not a scoreboard carved into stone. The headline number may be useful, but it makes more sense when read beside the sample, field dates, margin of error, and exact question wording.
Registered voters, likely voters, and all adults are different groups. A poll conducted after a major event may capture a temporary reaction. Online panels, phone surveys, and mixed methods can reach different populations. Weighting helps a sample resemble the broader public, but every model makes assumptions.
Small differences inside the margin of error should not be described as dramatic movement. A candidate leading by one point in a poll with a three-point margin is better described as being in a close race. Trends across several reputable polls usually tell more than one isolated result.
