How to read a public lawsuit without declaring a winner

A lawsuit can reveal important public information, but the first filing usually presents one side’s allegations. Filing a complaint does not prove every claim, and a dramatic quotation from that complaint is not the same as a court finding.

The docket shows what happened next. The responding party may deny the allegations, ask the court to dismiss them, provide exhibits, or raise different facts. Judges can issue procedural orders long before deciding the central dispute.

Viral Laundry’s Stain Report identifies the document and stage being discussed. We use words such as “alleges,” “argues,” “ruled,” and “settled” carefully, and we do not describe a settlement as an admission unless the agreement says so.

This lets readers follow accountability stories without turning legal process into a verdict before the evidence has been tested.
